stills	The medium of soft pastel is essentially pure pigment, ground into a fine powder and mixed with a minimum of binder. This is what gives pastel paintings such vibrancy.	skins
Soft, dry or 'chalk' pastel has been used for sketches and studies since the 16th century, but artists producing finished paintings in this medium have included Chardin, Renoir, Courbet, Whistler, Cassatt, Bonnard, Rego and Degas.	scapes	Painting with pastel offers an immediacy unrivalled by wet media such as oils or watercolours. The artist applies colour directly from the pastel stick to a coloured and/or textured surface.
animals	Oil pastel is the dust-free cousin of soft pastel, and offers jewel-like colours and a creamy consistency. Its history as a fine-art medium began with Picasso in the 20th century.	oil pastels
